Section 2 - EMERGENCY OPERATIONS

250.04 Engine Retarding Systems

PURPOSE:

To clearly define the appropriate uses of engine retarding systems. The “Exhaust Brake” is an engine retarding system specifically adapted to fire apparatus for the purpose of slowing the forward momentum of the vehicle when the driver releases the accelerator pedal. The system augments the vehicle’s braking system, reduces wear and tear on the brake pads, and assists the driver in controlling the vehicle.

PROCEDURE:

  • The “Exhaust Brake” installed on Maitland’s emergency response vehicles are to be engaged at all times, except when noted in Policy 250.01, while operating the vehicles when road surfaces are dry. If road surfaces are wet, the switch for the engine retarding system is to remain in the “OFF” position until such time as the roads are once again dry and it is safe to utilize the system.
  • For vehicles with “HI / LO” exhaust brake positions: The switch is to remain in the “HI” position at all times when the exhaust brake is being utilized.
